From 11 to 23 August 2026, 42 participants of Albanian origin came together for a journey across Kosovë and Albania. They arrived from 14 countries with different stories, accents and connections to their roots. They left as a community.

At the beginning of OriginAL Cohort 10, many participants knew one another only through names on a list or conversations in a group chat. Some had visited Kosovë or Albania many times. Others were discovering the places their families had spoken about for the first time.

OriginAL offered far more than a tour across cities. Each activity opened a new way to connect with Albanian history, culture and everyday life. Between museum visits, long bus rides, shared meals, difficult conversations, music and laughter, the participants also learned about one another.

The first connections in Prishtina

The journey began in Prishtina, where participants arrived, checked in and met the people with whom they would share the next two weeks.

Activities at RIT Kosovo helped them move beyond first introductions and begin building trust. The official opening brought together participants, alumni, institutional representatives, partners and supporters to welcome the tenth OriginAL cohort and mark another milestone for the program.

The group explored Prishtina through its streets, monuments and public spaces. From the NEWBORN and Heroinat monuments to Reporting House and the city centre, each stop revealed another part of Kosovë’s recent history and evolving identity.

At the “As Knej As Anej” exhibition, participants encountered stories that reflected the experience of living between places, cultures and definitions of home. For many young people raised in the diaspora, the theme felt deeply familiar.

Community activities added another dimension to their time in the capital. Through volunteering with TOKA, AMC/ Teshavesha and local partners, participants contributed their time and energy while meeting people who work every day to strengthen their communities.

Encountering history through people and places

OriginAL creates space for celebration, but it also asks participants to engage honestly with the past.

At the Jashari Family Memorial Complex in Prekaz, participants learned about and honoured the sacrifice of the Jashari family, whereas their visit to the Kosovë Security Force’s “Adem Jashari” Barracks helped them understand the historical connection behind its name and how that legacy continues to shape Kosovë today.

Later, during the outdoor screening of Hive in Prizren, the group saw a powerful story of loss, sacrifice and resilience represented on screen.

Discovering Prizren, Gjakovë, Junik and Pejë

In Prizren, the pace shifted between cultural discovery and festival energy.

The participants started their morning with traditional burek at ITP Prizren, toured the innovation park and explored one of Kosovë’s most historic cities. They walked through the old centre, climbed to Prizren Fortress and experienced DokuFest, where streets, courtyards and public spaces became gathering points for cinema and conversation.

Gjakovë offered another encounter with local heritage. A walk through the city introduced the group to its architecture and traditions, including the famous Grand Bazaar and the historic Hadum Mosque.

In Junik, the visit to the local teqe introduced participants to another part of Kosovë’s spiritual and cultural history.

A hike to Liqenat with Outdoor Kosovë gave everyone time away from the city. The climb demanded patience and mutual encouragement, but it rewarded the group with mountain views, fresh air and an experience that many would later remember as one of the program’s defining moments.

By this point, the participants no longer moved as individuals from different parts of the world. They waited for one another, shared water, exchanged jokes and celebrated every person who reached the top.

From the mountains to Shkodër

The road from Kosovë to Shkodër took the group through Fierza and across Lake Koman, where steep mountains and calm water created one of the most memorable travel days of the program.

Shkodër welcomed the cohort with its own mix of history, art and everyday city life. At Rozafa Castle, participants encountered the legends and historical layers connected to one of Albania’s best-known sites. The Marubi National Museum of Photography offered another way to understand the country, through photographs that preserved people, clothing, events and social life across generations.

A cultural tour, time by Lake Shkodër and a group bicycle ride allowed the participants to experience the city beyond its monuments. These quieter moments also gave friendships room to grow.

The strongest connections often formed between scheduled activities: during long conversations at breakfast, while walking back to the hotel or while sharing stories on the bus.

Experiencing Albania’s southern coast

The journey then continued south to Vlorë.

A boat trip to Sazan and Karaburun brought the group together for a full day at sea, while the beach offered time to rest after an intense program. The participants also visited the Monastery of Zvërnec and explored Vlorë, a city closely linked to Albania’s independence and national history.

These days balanced reflection with joy. Participants swam, danced, took photographs and enjoyed the freedom of being together without having to explain every part of their identity.

For diaspora youth, that feeling can be rare. Many grow up moving between cultures, languages and expectations. Within OriginAL, those differences did not require justification. They became the starting point for friendship.

Krujë, Tirana and the final days

On the way to Tirana, the cohort stopped in Krujë to visit the museum dedicated to Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu. The visit connected national history with questions about how historical figures, symbols and stories continue to shape Albanian identity today.

In Tirana, participants explored the city through sites that represented different periods of Albania’s past and present. Visits included cultural and historical institutions, the Pyramid of Tirana and the Ivanaj Foundation, giving the group further insight into the country’s history, civic life and continuing development.

As the program approached its conclusion, Albanian Night brought everyone together in traditional clothing from different Albanian regions. It became an evening of music, dancing, photographs and celebration. Each outfit carried a connection to a place, while the group created a celebration that belonged to everyone.

The closing ceremony and feedback session offered time to look back at everything the cohort had experienced. Participants reflected on the places they had visited, the histories they had encountered and the relationships they had formed.

More than a trip home

OriginAL does not offer one fixed definition of what it means to be Albanian.

Instead, it gives young people the space to ask questions, discover new parts of their heritage and build their own connection to it. A participant who speaks Albanian fluently and one who knows only a few words can still share the same desire to understand where their family comes from. Someone who visits every summer and someone arriving for the first time can both discover something new.

Cohort 10 showed that connection does not happen through one monument, one meal or one conversation. It grows through many small moments: learning someone’s family story, helping a friend during a hike, hearing a name pronounced at a memorial, dancing together at Albanian Night or realizing that another person understands an experience you have struggled to explain.

The 42 participants arrived with different relationships to Kosovë, Albania and their Albanian identity. During two weeks, they created a shared understanding.

They returned home with new friendships, stronger connections to their roots and memories that will continue long after the journey ended.

They also became part of a growing OriginAL community, one that now includes more than 320 young people brought together since 2022 by a common wish: to know where they come from, to understand one another and to remain connected.

Last night, the official opening ceremony of the 10th Cohort of the OriginAL program was held at RIT Kosovo in Prishtina, marking the beginning of a new experience for young Albanians from the diaspora.

The ceremony opened with remarks by Sihana Bejtullahu, Co-Executive Director of GERMIN, while Gjovani Cinari, an OriginAL alumnus, shared his personal experience and reflected on the impact the program has had on his journey.

Participants were also welcomed by Albina Balidemaj-Basha, President of RIT Kosovo, through a video message.

In his remarks, Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo Albin Kurti emphasized that the OriginAL program gives young people from the diaspora an opportunity to learn more about Albanian history, culture, and identity beyond state borders. He stressed that the connection with one’s place of origin is not inherited automatically, but must be discovered, experienced, and built over time.

Also present at the opening ceremony was Silke Bellmann, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kosovo.

Representing the diaspora, Avni Mustafaj, Co-Chair of the GERMIN Board, shared a message with the participants of Cohort 10, while Elvin Guri, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and donor of the OriginAL program, welcomed the young participants with remarks of his own.

Lirim Krasniqi, Co-Executive Director of GERMIN, presented the journey of OriginAL to date and the program’s vision for the future.

The evening concluded with an artistic performance by Egzon Sadiku, Project Manager at GERMIN, followed by a cocktail reception for participants and guests. The ceremony was moderated by Arieta Dragusha, Communications Manager at GERMIN.

With the official opening of Cohort 10, participants now begin their journey across Kosovo and Albania through activities that will bring them closer to the history, culture, people, and places connected to their heritage.

On June 10, the Albanian-American community came together in New York City for a special evening in support of OriginAL and Albanian diaspora youth. Hosted by Fadil Berisha, Avni Mustafaj, and Mark Kosmo, the event brought together supporters, alumni, and friends of the program for a night filled with stories, gratitude, and shared commitment to the next generation.

Through the stories of OriginAL alumni, guests had the chance to better understand the impact of the program. OriginAL is not simply a visit to our homelands. For many young people, it is a meaningful journey of identity, belonging, and connection to Albanian roots.

The New York City event marked an important achievement for OriginAL. During the evening, we raised $96,570 in support of the program. Following the completion of the June cohort, OriginAL now looks ahead to the upcoming cohorts in August and November, and to other young people still waiting for this opportunity.

For the 2026 program overall, we have now raised $131,000 toward our goal of $200,000, which will help support at least 100 participants.

What happens when 36 young Albanians from 13 countries come together to explore the lands of their ancestors? You get OriginAL — a two-week journey filled with connection, discovery, and moments that stay with you long after the suitcases are unpacked.

It all kicked off in Prishtina, where the energy was contagious and the anticipation high. On the campus of RIT Kosovo, participants were welcomed by familiar faces who believe in this mission — from Ms. Liza Gashi of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, to Mr. Lavon Bajrami of RIT, and Mr. Xhelal Derguti of GIZ. GERMIN’s Co-Directors, Sihana Bejtullahu and Lirim Krasniqi, set the tone with a reminder: this is more than a trip, it’s a chance to rediscover who you are.

From the first team-building games at Innovation Centre Kosovo to laughter-filled rope-pulling competitions in Gërmia Park, bonds started to form quickly. “I didn’t think I could feel so close to people I met just yesterday,” said one participant. But that’s OriginAL. It creates instant belonging.

The journey took a deeper turn in Prekaz, where the story of the Jashari family came alive through Sala Jashari’s powerful words. Silence fell as participants laid flowers at the memorial, each one reflecting on sacrifice, strength, and what it means to be free.

In Gjakovë and Krushë e Madhe, they met women who rebuilt their village from the ashes of war through a powerful agricultural cooperative. In Pejë, they stepped into the House of Judo, where Kosova’s champions are made. “It made me proud in a way I’ve never felt before,” someone shared.

Then came Prizren — colorful, historic, and unforgettable. Walking through cobbled streets, climbing the fortress, visiting the League of Prizren museum, and hearing from Veton Nurkollari of Dokufest, participants saw how tradition and innovation coexist.

Week two brought new energy as the journey continued into Albania. In Shkodër, participants walked through the Museum of Memory, where stories of political persecution during communism offered space for reflection and important conversations about freedom and justice. In Durrës, they explored the city’s ancient Roman Amphitheater, stood by the Venetian Tower, and stepped inside the Turkish Hammam, experiencing layers of history that still shape Albania today. The day ended with music, dancing, and a seaside cultural dinner.

In Vlorë, the group boarded a boat and sailed along the Ionian coast, visiting Haxhi Ali’s Cave and the Karaburun Peninsula, where Albania’s natural beauty unfolded in full. From the water to the mountains, the next stop was Berat, where participants climbed through the white-walled neighborhoods of the castle and heard stories passed down through generations. A traditional lunch rounded out a day rich in history and hospitality.

In Krujë, they followed the footsteps of Albania’s national hero, Skënderbeu, through the castle grounds and into the museum that honors his legacy of resistance and unity. The journey ended in Tirana, where the group explored the capital’s energy, joined a creative workshop with BetaPlan, and shared one last celebration during Albanian Night. Laughter, music, and farewells filled the air as the participants looked back on two weeks that shaped their view of home and each other.

Two weeks. Two countries. One unforgettable experience. OriginAL 2025 wasn’t just about where they went, it was about who they became — together.

On October 3, 2025, the Albanian community in Switzerland gathered at SOHO Zürich for an evening that will long be remembered — “Roots that Connect Us.”

Organized by GERMIN, this special event celebrated the success of the OriginAL program, which offers young members of the Albanian diaspora a fully funded two-week journey to discover their roots in their ancestral homeland.

During the evening, attendees had the opportunity to hear remarks and presentations from Anila Hyka Smørgrav, Lirim Krasniqi, and Avni Mustafaj from GERMIN, as well as inspiring speeches by the Albanian author based in Switzerland Shqipe Sylejmani and the event’s keynote speaker, football legend Lorik Cana. They shared powerful reflections on identity, belonging, and the role of the diaspora in shaping our shared future.

The evening culminated with the screening of a short documentary about one of the OriginAL cohorts, followed by stories from program alumni from Switzerland — Djellza Lahu, Elira Neziraj, and Trim Zejnullahu — as well as Paola Gjergjo, an alumna of the 6th cohort, who traveled all the way from Sweden to attend. The event concluded with a live musical performance by Arjeta Zuta & Leutrim Aliji.

On August 4th, the second edition of the OriginAL program was officially launched. Participants had the opportunity to see the program’s insights, its inaugural edition, and its ambitious goals.

This event opened with a surprise performance by Arbër Selmani, journalist and poet from Pristina. He moved the audience with a rendition of his poem called “Kur vdiq baba.”

The co-director of GERMIN, Lirim Krasniqi, spoke about the importance and impact that this program has had and expressed that he is proud to be part of an initiative of historical importance and thanked all the supporters of this project.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Donika Gërvalla-Schwarz, said that she is very proud of last year’s result and of the group of the second edition of the OriginAL program.

Acting President at RIT Kosovo (A.U.K), Michael Hess, talked about the important connection that the American University in Kosovo has with the diaspora.

We also had supporters of the OriginAL program among us. Investor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist from the Diaspora in Bulgaria, Elvin Guri. He talked about how this program helps the youth of the diaspora to understand not only their roots but also their parents and their sacrifices.

One of the main pillars of this program is the founder and Chairman of the Board of the Global Albanian Foundation (GAF), Mark Kosmo. Unable to come from Boston, USA, through a video message, he once again expressed his support and told the participants that he really looks forward to starting this journey.

From Paris, we also had GERMIN’s co-chair of the board, Anila Smørgrav, who greeted and thanked the participants, supporters, and partners of OriginAL.

At the event, seven esteemed alumni of the OriginAL program graced the gathering. Among them, Diellza and Elsa Vejseli, who once participated and now volunteered for the second edition, took the stage to recount their enriching experiences, the enduring friendships forged, and offered valuable insights into the program’s overarching objectives and impact.

The organization and networking of Albanian youth and students in the diaspora has been and remains the foundation of community organization in the diaspora and the source of activism for the country of origin. Young people and students in the diaspora play an important role in intergenerational relations within the diaspora and in links with organizations and institutions in the homeland. Despite this great potential, a series of structural, social, and political challenges currently limit youth and student organization in the diaspora. The lack of coordination and institutional support, communication problems, and “space-time” barriers make it difficult for youth to collaborate and build sustainable networks. This limits the impact they can have on the community and their connection to their country of origin.

Current Challenges

Albanian youth and students in the diaspora face a number of challenges that hinder their sustainable organization and effective networking. One of the most noticeable problems is the lack of sustainable structures in areas where there has been no tradition of community organization. Although interpersonal connections exist and students often maintain contact with each other, the lack of a shared entity or platform makes it difficult to coordinate activities and projects. Individual efforts often remain fragmented and fail to have the desired impact on the community or on links with the homeland. In some cases, even where there are community associations and organizations, their structure is often weak, and the lack of institutional and financial support exacerbates the situation.

In some countries, such as Switzerland, the diplomatic representations of Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia have played an important role in supporting student communities. But in other countries, diaspora representations have been reported as often having no right to participate in public activities, leaving organizations without a trusted institutional partner. Moreover, the lack of financial support from Albanian entrepreneurs and individuals, as well as from state institutions, has created significant gaps in financing projects and activities that could help the community. This situation also appears in the case of Albanian schools in the diaspora, which often operate with limited resources.

Another important challenge is the impact of politics on student associations and organizations abroad. The involvement of political parties from Kosovo and Albania has created a polarizing and fragmented environment, often resulting in strong divisions that hinder joint activities. Various associations have become arenas for political party support, pushing away young people who want to contribute independently. An example is the association in Geneva, where its members were closely linked to a political party. This association not only temporarily removed the terms “apolitical” and “nonpartisan” from its statutes but also continued to use the organization’s social platforms for political activities, even after the departure of its members. Similar situations have been reported in Lausanne and in the Albanian student federation in Switzerland, where political divisions have hindered cooperation and created an unsafe environment for organizations aiming to maintain an independent and unified stance.

Additionally, divisions between Albanians from different regions of the nation represent another challenge. Albanians from North Macedonia, the Presevo Valley, Montenegro, and Cameria often feel left out by Albanians from Albania and Kosovo. This feeling of exclusion comes from the lack of their inclusion in activities by organizations or any institutional support addressing them directly. This challenge highlights the need for a more inclusive approach from all parties to ensure that every Albanian, regardless of regional origin, feels part of a common and equal nationality.

Creating a Unified Platform

The role of technology is a very important theme for the diaspora. A large number of Albanian students are oriented towards information technology (programming, engineering, etc.), and it is in the national interest to use their skills as solutions to our challenges. Technology can help overcome geographic and time barriers. Using digital platforms and mobile applications can facilitate collaboration between Albanian students in different countries around the world.

A great example of organizations that have created virtual platforms to support students worldwide is “NAYORA” – The National Assembly of Youth Organizations of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Lithuanian World Youth Association “Pasaulio”. Through these platforms, these organizations have built communication and collaboration bridges, offering educational resources and support for youth, no matter where they are located. These initiatives have helped strengthen connections between students and promoted equal access to global educational opportunities. Furthermore, Albanian organizations also used virtual platforms during the pandemic for national and cultural activities, bringing Albanians together in a virtual environment. However, technology is not a sole solution. The lack of a unified platform for all Albanian students in the diaspora remains a major barrier. A mobile application dedicated to networking and coordination would be extremely useful in uniting Albanian youth around the world.

Recommendations

To address the challenges of youth and student organization in the diaspora, here are several concrete recommendations that can contribute to strengthening networking, collaboration, and the positive impact of Albanian youth and students in the diaspora:

Creation of a Unified Platform for Albanian Youth and Students in the Diaspora: One of the main challenges identified is the lack of a sustainable and inclusive structure that unifies the efforts of young people. Therefore, it is vital to create a unified platform that will serve as a forum for all Albanian youth and student associations. This platform should:

Allow the sharing of experiences and resources.

Create spaces for the development of joint projects and activities that strengthen academic, social, and cultural ties.

Provide opportunities for members to meet (even when traveling in a city).

Development of a Mobile Application and Digital Platform for Albanian Diaspora Youth Networking: To overcome geographical and time barriers, a mobile application could serve as an effective solution for bringing Albanian youth into a shared space. This application should offer:

Easy registration for Albanian students and youth worldwide.

Space for virtual events, thematic discussions, and sharing experiences.

Opportunities for professional, academic, and social networking.

Features that allow collaboration on joint projects, resource sharing, and building strong connections with countries of origin.

Preservation of Organizational Independence from Political Influence: One of the major problems identified is the interference of political parties, which has led to the polarization of associations and weakened cooperation among youth. To prevent this, it is recommended that:

The statutes of student organizations clearly emphasize political neutrality and prohibit political interference.

Oversight mechanisms be created by parent organizations to ensure the independence of associations and new organizations.

State and diplomatic institutions provide support but maintain a neutral political stance in relation to these organizations.

Increasing Inclusion of Albanians from All Regions (Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, the Presevo Valley, Montenegro, and Chameria): To address divisions and feelings of exclusion among Albanians from different regions, it is essential for organizations to be inclusive. This can be achieved by:

Creating internal rules that promote diversity and inclusion.

Providing equal opportunities for all Albanians, regardless of regional origin.

Undertaking special initiatives to encourage the participation of Albanians from North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Chameria in national and international activities.

Encouraging Academic Links through International Programs like Erasmus+: International programs such as Erasmus+ can play a key role in strengthening connections between Albanian students in the diaspora and institutions in the countries of origin. For this:

Albania and Kosovo should intensify efforts to involve more Albanian students in these programs.

Student associations in the diaspora can create partnerships with local universities to promote opportunities for academic exchanges.

Drafting a Manual for New Organizations: The establishment of new organizations often faces numerous challenges. To ease this process, a manual or guide could be created containing:

Recommendations for structuring and managing associations.

Guidelines for accessing financial support and resources.

Proposals for ways to collaborate between existing and new associations.

Raising National Awareness for Youth in the Diaspora: To avoid divisions and the sense of “marginalization,” it is crucial that every organization, institution, and individual works to promote a sense of national belonging. Activities and projects should emphasize common values and traditions, encouraging greater unity among Albanians.

These recommendations offer a comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges and leveraging the extraordinary potential of Albanian youth in the diaspora. Through cooperation, organization, and sustainable support, these initiatives can have a strong and lasting impact on the development of the Albanian community both within and outside the country.

On the second day of the OriginAL program, the fourth cohort visited Gjirafa HQ in Prishtina, Kosovo. Made possible through a collaborative effort between GERMIN and Gjirafa, the visit provided participants with a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the operations and innovative spirit of one of Kosovo’s leading tech companies. OriginAL is a program designed to help young Albanians from the diaspora connect with their cultural roots, and this cohort comprises 32 young Albanians from over 10 countries.

Guided by Greta Kamberi, Head of People and Culture at Gjirafa, the participants were introduced to various departments and activities and they got an inside look at how Gjirafa’s products are developed and the processes that drive Gjirafa’s success in the digital world.

Engaging with the Gjirafa Team

OriginALs had the opportunity to engage with Gjirafa’s talented team members, who shared insights into their roles and responsibilities and answered the participants’ questions without hesitation. Participants were particularly inspired by the stories of team members, some of whom have returned to Kosovo from the diaspora to contribute to the country’s already growing technology industry.

A Story of Return and Success

A highlight of the visit was a conversation with Salvi Tony Hoxha, an Albanian professional who returned from the USA to further his career in Gjirafa. His journey back to Kosovo is proof of the opportunities that the country offers to its diaspora. Among other things, he spoke about the differences between working for large corporations in the US and his current role at Gjirafa, emphasizing how his experience at Gjirafa is one of his career successes. His story resonated deeply with OriginAL participants, who are themselves part of the diaspora exploring their roots and opportunities in their homeland.

This visit was made possible through the collaboration between GERMIN and Gjirafa. GERMIN’s mission to engage the diaspora and create meaningful connections with their homeland aligns perfectly with Gjirafa’s vision of leveraging technology to drive Kosovo’s development. This partnership amplifies the power of collaboration in creating impactful experiences for the youth and the diaspora, encouraging them to contribute to the socio-economic development of our countries.

It also highlights the importance of programs like OriginAL in bridging the gap between the diaspora and their homeland, fostering a sense of belonging and commitment to our home countries’ future.
