Diaspora Philanthropy
About the program
Diaspora philanthropy is essential in promoting social welfare and development in many countries. Germin actively promotes Albanian Diaspora philanthropy, to support not-for-profit organisations in Albania, Kosova, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and the Presheva Valley.

The Global Albanians Foundation (GAF), founded in 2018 in the USA, is one way Germin promotes diaspora giving. The GAF provides a trusted online platform where Albanian not-for-profits can raise funds, enabling members of the global Albanian community to donate directly to projects and organizations they wish to support. The GAF is instrumental in providing a credible link to diaspora-based organisations, facilitating online donations and reducing the costs of diaspora philanthropy. Additionally, the GAF provides a mechanism for Albanian Diaspora donors to receive tax deductions for their donations, an advantage not available when donating directly to Western Balkan organisations.


Through this initiative, we help direct valuable diaspora resources toward the economic and social development of communities in need, particularly in regions with reduced funding from traditional international donors.

Germin and GAF’s collaboration spans several impactful initiatives including OriginAL, Diaspora Professionals Network, Helping Mothers and Children, Albania Earthquake Relief, and COVID-19 Relief.

Through these efforts, GERMIN and GAF are essential drivers of diaspora philanthropy, empowering communities and contributing to sustainable development across the Western Balkans.

GERMIN works closely with the Global Albanians Foundation (GAF) to jointly advance the Global Albanian Diaspora Philanthropy. GAF’s mission is to cultivate Albanian philanthropy worldwide, particularly within the diaspora, to address significant social, economic, and cultural challenges while promoting growth and development in the Albanian-speaking regions.

The Foundation has launched several initiatives to support Albanians living in Kosovo, Albania, and North Macedonia, utilizing the resources of the large Albanian diaspora to secure funds for high-impact and innovative nonprofit organizations through crowdfunding and online donations. GAF aims to redirect a portion of these resources toward the economic and social development of the region.

The Global Albanians Foundation (GAF) also serves as an important institutional mechanism for the Albanian diaspora to support their homeland, compensating for the decline in funding from traditional international donors that nonprofit organizations in the region have experienced over recent decades.

COVID-19 Relief Campaigns
This fundraising campaign secured support from the diaspora to assist families in need in Kosovo during the COVID-19 crisis. The goal was to provide essential food packages and hygiene materials, while also supporting local producers by purchasing these items from the local market.

Objectives:

Raise funds from the diaspora and local contributors to purchase the packages.
Distribute essential food and hygiene packages.
Support local producers.
Ensure the packages exclusively contained "Made-in-Kosovo" products.
This campaign raised funds to support families in need in the municipality of Presevo during the COVID-19 crisis, with a similar focus on purchasing locally produced food and hygiene products.

Objectives:

Raise sufficient funds from the diaspora and local contributors.
Distribute essential packages to families in need.
Focused on raising funds for vulnerable families in the Dibra region during the pandemic, this campaign also prioritized supporting local producers.

Goals:
• Fundraising from the Diaspora and local communities to cover package costs.
• Deliver essential food and hygiene packages.

Activities:
• Raised $4,268.49 through a Facebook online campaign and $524.41 via the website.

This fundraising campaign aimed to assist families in need in the regions of Ulqin, Krajë, Tuzi, Plav, and Guci in Montenegro. Like other campaigns, it focused on providing essential supplies while simultaneously supporting local producers and businesses.

Year in Review GERMIN 2023
As we reflect on the past year, it brings us immense pride to share the highlights of our tireless efforts in fostering meaningful connections between the Diaspora and our homelands. Through several initiatives and events, we have worked hard towards strengthening the bonds that unite our vibrant diasporic community with our roots in the homeland. From engaging cultural and professional exchanges to forging valuable partnerships, we have endeavored to create a space where the rich tapestry of Albanian Diaspora flourishes. This '2023 in review' encapsulates the spirit of unity, collaboration, and shared aspirations that continue to define our collective 'diasporizing' journey. Know-how and Skills' Transfer / Exchanges Know-how for Kosova's Municipalities and CSOs 21 Diaspora Professionals have been linked with Kosova's municipalities and Civil Society Organizations to contribute in a variety of development and capacity-building projects. From digital educational platforms to development strategies, diaspora's know-how has been leveraged by local stakeholders. Read about one example. Diaspora Mentorship for Women in Politics 52 elected and prospective elective women from municipalities of Shtime, Istog, Vushtrri, Suhareka, Lipjan, Rahovec, and Podujevë were mentored by 26 diaspora experts in key areas of interest, connecting and fostering mutual learning relationships. A final conference gathered all of them, as well as institutional stakeholders. Read more. Regional Youth Mobility and Exchanges GERMIN, together with partner organizations from North Macedonia and Montenegro continued the initiative “Enhancing Regional Cooperation and Mobility among Young Researchers in the Western Balkans” under the MOVE Grant Scheme, funded by the Western Balkans Fund. 6 fellows finished a 10-day fellowship in neighboring countries. Advocacy & Diplomacy Diaspora Flet 2023 conference gathers over 500 attendees from 16 countries 72 hours program, 500+ participants, 74 speakers, 13 sessions, 21 partner organizations and institutions. On May 18, 19, and 20, 2023, GERMIN organized the third edition of the largest Albanian Diaspora Conference, “Diaspora Flet”, in Prishtina. Themed “How can we co-create?” – the conference aimed to explore and foster cooperation in various fields, positively affecting the diaspora communities and making significant changes in the countries of origin. Read more. Kosova Improves Diaspora Voting The Parliament of Kosova has enhanced the out-of-country voting by amending the electoral law, which includes Germin's recommendation to allow physical voting in diplomatic missions from the next elections. Read more. By visiting 15 cities, over 60 sites, and meeting hundreds of local peers, their OriginAL homeland experience was one of a lifetime. The OriginAL 2023 was one of great impact and an increased demand. This event, facilitated by Fadil Berisha, gathered over 800 of the Albanian-Americans in Town Hall Theatre to support OriginAL Program and its noble mission to connect young Albanians worldwide. Mark Kosmo of the Global Albanians Foundation pledged $1 million from now to his 100th birthday. Facilitating Export Promotion & Diaspora Market Linkages Kosova Women Entrepreneurs access Swiss German market 40 women entrepreneurs from Kosovo went to Düsseldorf where they had the opportunity to meet with dozens of diaspora businesses. In collaboration with Albanian-German Business Uninon in Germany, and supported by USAID Kosovo Compete, they also visited the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) of the city of Essen. Read more. 10 local businesses at the Diaspora Business Fair in Vienna Through MARDI Project, GERMIN supported 20 local producers from Kosova to participate at the Diaspora Business Fair, organized by the Albanian Diaspora Business Network in Austria. The fair was held in Vienna on October 21, 2023. Over a hundred B2B meetings took place from companies of IT, Wood-processing, Food Processing and Textile industries. Read More. Linking Diaspora ICT Businesses with home country On October 13-14, 2023, we joined the largest technology conference in the region - KosICT, to facilitate the business-to-business (B2B) meetings between local companies and those from the diaspora or with diaspora background. Dozends of companies from the ICT and related sectors explored opportunities for collaboration and partnership. Read more. Diaspora Philanthropy Korçarët Ndihmojmë Korçarët Dr. Yvonne Naum from Seattle, originally from Korça, inspired GAF to start this program by pledging  $22,500 as a start. Three projects will be initially supported to Helping Vulnerable Children at Naim Frasheri School; Roma Children at Day Care Centers, and Children with Disabilities in Korça. Watch Yvonne's message for you. Diaspora helping flood-affected areas in Kosova In response to the January 2023 floods in Kosova, organizations, five diaspora-based organizations from the US and Germany initiated the "Diaspora for Kosova" fundraising campaign to support affected families and buildings. The Technical High Schools of Skenderaj and Mitrovica were supported to renovate their facilities damaged by the floods. Diaspora Organizations Network This initiative seeks to channel the collective influence of the Albanian Diaspora into a force for positive change. Our objectives consist on supporting Advocacy efforts of different organizations; supporting Cultural Preservation and Anti-Defamation; and empowering youth to actively engage in community-driven initiatives.

Inva Mula to perform in New York for the OriginAL Program

“Oh my sons, I cried oceans for you. For 8546 days. Where are you? Only two of you returned to me”. Kështu në vargje poetike e ka përkthyer dhimbjen nga takimi me Nënën Ferdonije, Elsa Vejseli, pjesëmarrësja e programit OriginAL. Elsa, ishte një nga 40 pjesëmarrësit pionier të këtij program që nga 10 deri 22 gushti qëndruan në Kosovë e në Shqipëri, me qëllimin e vetëm – që të ‘gjejnë rrënjët shqiptare’. Për të, si për shumicën e pjesëmarrësve ditët e kaluara në OriginAL, ishin ditë që i dhanë kuptim origjinës së tyre shqiptare. Nga hulutimi të cilën e kemi realizuar në ditën e fundit të programit, 92 për qind e pjesëmarrësve janë shprehur se OriginAL ‘ishte një udhëtim që u ka ndihmuar të lidhen me rrënjët shqiptare’. Për ne, ekipin prapa OriginAL, 92 përqindshi nuk është thjeshtë numër, por është përmbajtje dhe mbi të gjitha realizim i misionit tonë. OriginAL ishte shumëngjyrësh në shumë dimensione. Në aspektin e idesë, aktiviteteve, qyteteve që vizituam, muzeve por mbi të gjitha në aspektin e pjesëmarrësve. OriginAL ishte i tillë siç ishte për shkak të pjesëmarrësve pionier të këtij programi. Kur në fillim na lindi ideja për një program që për qëllim kishte ‘gjetjen e rrënjëve shqiptare’, ne bëmë gjithçka që të sjellim të rinj të pasionuar për kulturën dhe historinë shqiptare. Por, në asnjërën rrethanë nuk menduam që ne do kishim dhjetëra të rinj kaq entuziastë, sa ishin në vitin e parë të OriginAL-it. Prandaj, përmes këtij shkrimi duam që ju të kuptoni më shumë pikërisht për ta. OriginAL-istët tanë! Elsa Vejseli, me prejardhje nga Maqedonia e Veriut por që është lindur e është rritur në kryeqytetin gjerman, e përshkruante OriginAL-in si një program që ka pritur gjithë jetën të ndodhte. “Kur fillimisht dëgjova për OriginAL-in, thash ‘po’ kjo është ajo për të cilën kemi nevojë”, shprehej Elsa gjithë entuziazëm në ditën e parë të programit. Elsa në program ka qenë me motrën e saj Diellzën. Të dyja kanë krijuar shoqëri me shumë prej pjesëmarrësve, duke u siguruar që të takohen me ta edhe pas përfundimit të OriginAL. Jetnisi, djali nga Dukagjini por që gjithë jetën e ka kaluar në Belgjikë, kujdesej që të takohej me të gjithë, papërjashtim. Një djalë 24 vjeçar, që po doktoron për inxhinieri e cilëson OriginAL-in si një mundësi jetësore për të cilën ndihet shumë krenar. Marku, djali 18 vjeç nga Malësia por që është lindur dhe rritur në Amerikë, gjithmonë e mban me krenari një zinxhir me shqiponjë. Për të prejardhja shqiptare është një prej gjërave për të cilat ndihet më së shumti krenar. Gjatë gjithë udhëtimit, Marku ka mbartur me vete flamurin shqiptar e bluzën të stampuar me emblemën e Ushtrisë Çlirimtare të Kosovës. Kështu, ai tregonte krenarin që ka për kombësinë shqiptare. Alanuri dhe Sena, ishin dy vajzat nga Turqia me prejardhje shqiptare. Kur në fillim i kemi intervistuar që të jenë pjesë e OriginAL-it, mund t’ia shihje entuziazmin për të mësuar më shumë për vendin e paraardhësve të tyre. Beqiri dhe Anisa, vëlla e motër nga Dibra por që jetojnë në Greqi, çdo herë kur vizitonim vendet historike (sidomos në Kosovë), ata ishin tërë kuriozitet. E kishin pritur me vite një program të tillë, jo vetëm për vizita në vendet historike por mbi të gjitha për tu takuar me shqiptarë të tjerë. Kristina, një vajzë si rreze dielli. Gjatë intervistës ku edhe u përzgjodh të jetë pjesë e OriginAL-it, sytë i vizëllonin nga kënaqësia kur ia kumtuam lajmin që është përzgjedhur. “Ju faleminderit që më mundësuat të lidhem me rrënjët e mija”, shprehej Kristina në ditën e fundit të programit. Ajo dhe Frederika, u miqësuan menjëherë. Frederika, një gocë më e qetë por me një shpirt artistik, kujdesej gjithmonë që të bënte fotografi dhe të ‘ngrinte’ kujtimet e ditëve në OriginAL. I lindur dhe i rritur në Itali, Danieli ishte padyshim djali më çapkën i grupit. Ai ishte tërë kohës me humor dhe ishte gjithkun dhe me gjithsecilin. Aty ku dëgjoje të qeshura, aty ishte Danieli. Ai e fliste bukur gjuhën shqipe por seç kishte një problem të kuptonte shqiptarët e Kosovës. Por në fund të programit, ai edhe mësoi disa shprehje ‘alla kosovarqe’. Danieli krijoi shoqëri me secilin por mbi të gjitha me Erlindin, shqiptarin nga Serbia. Erlindi ua shpjegonte të gjithëve si ishte të jesh shqiptar e të jetosh në Serbi. Ndonëse i ri në moshë, Erlindi është tejet i përditësuar me ngjarjet politike në Kosovë, Shqipëri dhe në Serbi- prandaj pas çdo vizite ai kujdesej që mikut të tij nga Italia t’i jepte edhe informata shtesë. “Çdo ditë më mirë se dje”, thoshte Bledi me prejardhje nga Suhareka e që jeton në Itali. Kështu e përshkruante çdo herë Bledi kur e pyesnim se si po kalon në OriginAL. Për të si për shumicën prej pjesëmarrësve, ky ishte padyshim një prej udhëtimeve më mbresëlënëse të jetës. Roni e fliste aq bukur gjuhën shqipe, ndonëse i lindur dhe i rritur në Gjermani. “Për prindërit ka qenë e rëndësishme që ne fëmijët ta flisnim shqipen. Gjatë fëmijërisë, çdo mbrëmje mësonim gjuhën shqipe”, thoshte Roni kur e pyesnin se si e ka mësuar shqipen. Shqipen bukur e fliste edhe Ilaria. Ajo është një vajzë gjithë jetë, mjaftonte të dëgjonte një tingull dhe fillonte të vallëzonte. Iliri, një djalë nga Gjilani por që jeton në Francë ëndërron që një ditë të kthehet e të jap kontributin në Kosovë. Flet me aq dashuri për vendlindjen dhe është aq i përditësuar me ngjarjet politike në vend. Sara nuk fliste shumë pasi sytë e saj shprehnin më shumë se fjalët. Kishte vite që nuk kishte vizituar vendin e origjinës por OriginAL-i i la një shije ndryshe për Shqipërinë e Kosovën. Trina, vajza më artiste e grupit. Në kohë të lirë, ajo vizatonte shokët dhe shoqet e saj të OriginAL-it. Trina, është lindur dhe rritur në Londër. Çdo vit vjen në Kosovë, por për të ishte hera e parë që vizitonte aq shumë vende historike dhe kulturore. Ajo dhe Linda u bënë mike të mira. Linda, e lindur dhe e rritur në Gjermani kishte një dëshirë të paparë për të mësuar më shumë për vendlindjen e prindërve të saj. Xhoi, ashtu si edhe vet emri i saj ishte ‘gëzimi’ i grupit. E fliste aq bukur shqipen, sa po të mos e dije që nuk është rritur në Shqipëri, mund lirisht ta ngatërroje për një ‘tironse’. Dita, seç ka një përzierje të këndshme të një njuorkezeje dhe të një shqiptareje. Me një bukuri shqiptareje e me një shpirt të lirë prej amerikaneje, Dita plotësonte mjeshtërisht mozaikun e pjesëmarrësve të OriginAL-it. Këta janë vetëm disa nga pjesëmarrësit pionier të këtij programi shumëngjyrësh. OriginAL ishte i suksesshëm pikërisht për shkak të tyre. Prandaj, ky shkrim u dedikohet OriginAL-istëve. Atyre që e bënë OriginAL-in një eksperiencë të paharrueshme.

Besa campaign for Kosovo begins: Diaspora in aid of the homeland during COVID-19
The first Albanian Business Network “BESA” Foundation from Bavaria, Kosovo Manufacturing Club, the NGO GERMIN along with Global Albanians Foundation is developing a fundraising campaign in aid of the families in need affected by COVID-19 in Kosovo, by providing help packages containing food and basic hygiene products. This campaign aims to support local manufactures, as all of the products in the help packages are MADE IN KOSOVA. This campaign will help families in need in Kosovo municipalities in quarantine and in dire financial state due to the pandemic COVID-19.
