Did you know that 20 people leave their homeland every minute to escape war, terror or persecution?

June 20 is the day dedicated to all those who forcibly leave their homeland. World Refugees Day serves to highlight the difficulties that refugees face all around the world. World Refugee Day was held globally for the first time on June 20, 2001, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.

This year’s theme of World Refugee Day is “Whoever, Whatever, Whenever. Everyone has a right to seek safety”. It focuses on everyone’s right to safety, implying that refugees are welcome and should be treated with dignity regardless of their country of birth, race, origin, or religion.

According to the UNHCR, 65.3 million people have been forced to leave their homeland. Every day, 42,500 people leave their homes searching for a safer place.

Albanians from Kosova have felt the effects of being refugees on their skin. In 1999, 1 million Albanians were forced to leave their homes.

Today, we remember all those forced to leave their homeland and show empathy for their sufferings.
