Meet the Scholars: Bridging AI Theory and Production: Empowering the Next Generation of Software Engineers

The Diaspora4Innovation project exemplifies how structured, collaborative partnerships between diaspora scholars and resident academics can modernize higher education curricula and bridge the gap between academic theory and industry requirements.

Through the Diaspora4Innovation initiative, a synergistic academic partnership was established between Professor Assoc. Dr. Nihat Adar of the Canadian Institute of Technology (CIT), Professor Assoc. Dr. Entela Gavoçi, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at CIT, and diaspora researcher Dr. Lisana Berberi. This collaboration focused on the comprehensive modernization of the Artificial Intelligence/Machine/Deep Learning (AI ML 504) course within the Software Engineering Master’s program at CIT.

The collaborative process began with a strategic review of the existing curriculum to ensure alignment with rapidly evolving global technological standards. The team integrated MLOps (Machine Learning Operations) concepts into the syllabus, shifting the pedagogical focus toward production-ready systems. This transformation was supported by the co-development of a standardized, reproducible ML project template using a shared GitHub repository. By adopting “cookiecutter” design patterns, students moved beyond theoretical modeling to master environment management, configuration-driven experimentation, and version control for ML assets.

The teaching methodology evolved into an applied, interactive model. Researcher Dr. Lisana Berberi conducted intensive, hands-on lectures that allowed students to engage directly with MLOps best practices and implementation details. This practical approach, combined with the academic guidance provided by Prof. Assoc. Dr. Nihat Adar and Prof. Assoc. Dr. Entela Gavoçi, fostered high levels of student enthusiasm. The cohort demonstrated a marked increase in confidence, successfully transitioning from guided examples to complex, end-to-end machine learning workflows.

Beyond the classroom, the partnership facilitated broader institutional innovation. The team prepared a formal proposal for the CIT Education Commission to permanently integrate MLOps into the core curriculum. Furthermore, the collaboration extended to an international site visit at the H-FARM institution, where the scholars engaged with a wider network of researchers. These discussions centered on creating sustainable, cross-institutional research frameworks and fostering collaborative innovation environments that empower students to become creative, internationally-minded professionals.

This initiative has laid a robust foundation for ongoing cooperation. By institutionalizing these exchanges, the partnership aims to continuously update curricula in response to the AI era, ensuring that CIT students are equipped with the technical skills and innovative mindsets necessary for the global market.

This project demonstrates that diaspora engagement is most impactful when it is deeply embedded within institutional goals. We extend our gratitude to the Germin organization for facilitating this circulation of knowledge and providing the platform for this successful collaboration. The partnership between Prof. Assoc. Dr. Nihat Adar, Prof. Assoc. Dr. Entela Gavoçi, and Dr. Lisana Berberi serves as a model for how global expertise can locally empower the next generation of software engineers in Albania.
